What Matka Canyon is

Matka is a limestone gorge on the Treska river, about 15 km south-west of central Skopje. A dam built in the 1930s flooded the lower end, which left a long green lake between steep cliffs. It is described as the oldest artificial lake in North Macedonia, and the protected canyon area covers roughly 5,000 hectares.

The cliffs hold about ten caves, the longest 176 metres. The one visitors go to is Vrelo, a cave at water level that you reach by boat or kayak. A flooded shaft drops below it, and divers have explored it beyond 200 metres. Our Vrelo Cave guide explains what you see inside.

Three medieval monasteries are the second draw. The church of St Andrew stands near the dam, dated to 1388 or 1389 depending on the source. The Holy Mother of God monastery, from the 14th century, sits on the left bank and is home to nuns. St Nicholas Šiševski perches on a cliff high above the water. St Andrew’s Monastery is the easiest of the three to visit.

Walking into the canyon costs nothing. You pay for the extras: boat, kayak, food and toilets.

What most visitors do

  • Take a boat to Vrelo Cave. Boats leave from a dock beside the hotel and restaurant. Recent guides quote about 500 MKD (roughly €8) a head and around an hour for the whole trip. The boat and kayak page has the detail and the disagreements between sources.
  • Hire a kayak. A single kayak is about 300 MKD an hour. The water is calm enough for beginners, though paddling all the way to the cave takes much longer than an hour.
  • Walk the lakeside path. Expect 10 to 15 minutes on foot from the car park to the canyon, then another 10 to 15 minutes to St Andrew’s. The hiking page covers the longer trails.
  • Climb to St Nicholas. A small boat crosses the lake, then a steep climb of about 30 minutes follows.
  • Swim, or think about it. Guides agree the water is cold even in summer. Rock climbing is also popular, with the season running from around Easter to November.

One caution on the monasteries: a guide updated in July 2026 found St Andrew’s church closed on the author’s visit. Treat the interior as a bonus and the setting as the point.

Be realistic about the cave itself. A caving database, working from 2022 figures, puts the guided walk inside at about 180 metres and 20 minutes, and notes that visitors often find it small. The boat ride, the green water and the cliffs are the real reason to come.

Is Matka worth the trip?

Yes, as a half day, and mostly for the water and the cliffs. It suits people who like easy walking and being on a lake more than sights to tick off. If you only have one day in Skopje, the Old Bazaar shows you more of the city, and Matka is the half day you give to the outdoors.

Timing matters more than at most places. One recent guide had the path to itself at 8am, and found it filled by tour-bus groups by 10am. Weekends are busier than weekdays, and the narrow access road can back up with parked cars.

How far from Skopje, and how long to stay

The canyon is about 15 km from the centre, around 30 minutes by car in light traffic. Bus 60 from the main bus station takes 45 to 70 minutes. Our getting there guide compares the bus, taxis and driving.

Allow about three hours for a boat trip, a stroll to St Andrew’s and lunch. The itineraries we checked leave about two hours at the canyon on a group trip and up to three on a private one, which is why a one-hour boat ride can squeeze lunch out.

Tour or independent

Going alone is easy and cheap. Guides report a bus fare of roughly 35 to 60 MKD each way, and a taxi at about 600 to 1,000 MKD one way if you agree the price first. Add a boat ticket and you have a full day for a few hundred denars. The catch is timing. Buses run roughly every two hours, and on weekends one guide says the bus can stop well short of the canyon, so keep a taxi as backup for the return.

Group tours from Skopje cost about £14 to £21 a person on GetYourGuide (checked October 2026). Many combine Matka with Mount Vodno, the Millennium Cross and a short stop in the village of Gorno Nerezi, where the church of St Panteleimon, built in 1164, is known for its Byzantine frescoes. One vehicle strings those stops together, which is hard to match with buses. What the price leaves out is the Matka extras. Operator pages list the boat, kayak and lunch as paid on the spot.

One warning for 2026. The cable car up to the Millennium Cross has been reported out of service since April, with an overhaul targeted for the end of November (a guide checked it on 24 September). Ask your operator how the group will reach the cross. The day tours page explains what to ask, and the Millennium Cross page covers the walk.

Planning summary

  • Cost to enter: free. Bring cash in denars, since boats and kayaks may not take cards, and there is no cash machine at the canyon.
  • Boat to Vrelo Cave: about 500 MKD a head in most recent guides, with one reporting 400 (checked October 2026).
  • Getting there: bus 60, taxi, hire car or tour. Weekend parking fills up and the access road can jam.
  • When to go: spring and autumn are the comfortable seasons, and mornings are quietest. Seasons and weather are on the best time to visit page.
  • What to wear: shoes with grip, since the paths have stairs and slippery sections, plus a layer for the shaded cliffs.
  • Where to stay: a hotel and restaurant stand beside the lake, but most visitors base themselves in the city. See where to stay in Skopje.

More day trips from Skopje

If you have more than a day, the Millennium Cross and the Skopje Old Bazaar fit around Matka. Lake Ohrid is the big second trip, and group tours make it in 10 to 11.5 hours, which is long. The full list is on the nearby day trips page.

Questions people ask

How far is Matka Canyon from Skopje?

About 15 km south-west of the centre, or roughly 30 minutes by car. City bus 60 takes 45 to 70 minutes depending on the guide and the traffic (checked October 2026).

Is Matka Canyon free to visit?

Yes. Entry to the canyon and the lakeside paths is free, and parking was reported as free too. You pay on the spot for the boat, kayak hire, food and toilets, so bring cash in denars.

How long do you need at Matka Canyon?

Allow about three hours for a boat to Vrelo Cave, a walk to St Andrew's and lunch. Group half-day tours from Skopje leave about two hours at the canyon within a six-hour trip, and private ones up to three.

Is a day tour worth it, or should you go independently?

If you only want Matka, bus 60 or a shared taxi plus a boat ticket is the cheapest way. A group tour earns its price when you also want Mount Vodno and the Millennium Cross, a guide and no waiting for buses.

Can you go inside Vrelo Cave?

Yes, by boat or kayak, as there is no path to it. Guides disagree on whether cave entry is included in the boat price, so ask at the dock before you pay.

When is the best time to visit Matka Canyon?

Late spring and early autumn are the easiest months, with summer busier and winter quiet with fewer boats. Whatever the season, arriving before 10am avoids the tour-bus crowds.
