Why Ohrid, and why not as a quick add-on

Ohrid is the big second trip from Skopje, and the one that suffers most when squeezed into a day. It is 171 km by road, and a Skopje transfer company puts the drive at about three hours. Do that twice and you have spent around six hours in a car for a day at the lake. This page explains what you would see and why we suggest staying the night.

The lake and the town

Lake Ohrid is shared by North Macedonia and Albania. It covers 358 square kilometres, reaches 288 metres deep and sits at 693 metres above sea level. Wikipedia counts more than 200 endemic species, meaning species found nowhere else. The town of Ohrid had 38,818 people at the 2021 census.

UNESCO listed the area in 1979 and 1980 for its natural and cultural value, and extended the site in 2019 to the Albanian side. The two Wikipedia pages we checked disagree on which year covered which part, so we give the years only.

St John at Kaneo

This is the church most visitors photograph. It stands on a cliff above Kaneo Beach, and Wikivoyage calls it likely the most photographed in town. Sources date it to the 13th or 14th century, depending on whether you count the original building or the later rebuilding. It is a small cruciform church in the Middle-Byzantine style. A restoration in 1964 revealed frescoes in the dome, including Christ Pantocrator.

Wikivoyage lists entry at 100 denars (checked October 2026). Prices change, so treat that as a guide.

Other sights in the old town

  • Samuel’s Fortress sits above the old town, with views of the town, the lake and the mountains. Wikivoyage lists entry at 30 denars. Excavations suggest it replaced an earlier fortification from the 4th century BC.
  • St Sophia is a cathedral with 11th-century frescoes, listed at 100 denars.
  • The Ancient Theatre is the only Hellenistic theatre in North Macedonia, built around 200 BC, with a view of the lake.
  • The old town is compact enough to cover on foot. The bazaar is mainly one street, Saint Clement of Ohrid Street, and Wikivoyage says it gets packed on summer evenings.

Wikivoyage also lists daily boats to St Naum Monastery. They leave the main harbour at 10:00 and 11:00, return from St Naum at 15:30 and 16:30, and cost 900 denars round trip.

Getting there from Skopje

By car, the A2 motorway runs south from Skopje, and then a mountain road climbs into the Galičica area above the lake. The transfer company notes that winter passes can have snow, so allow extra time.

By bus, Wikivoyage reports a departure about once an hour, a journey of about 4.5 hours and a fare from 830 denars one way or 1,180 denars round trip. Skopje departures run from 05:30 to 19:30, though several are marked as summer only (June to August). In summer, buy tickets a day or two ahead. Our getting there guide covers the buses to Matka.

Why it is better overnight

The arithmetic is simple. Six hours in a car, or about nine on a bus, leaves little time for the town, the church and a swim. Wikivoyage says beaches are busiest in July and August. It suggests early morning or late afternoon for the crowded Gorica Hotel beach and after 18:00 for Ljubaništa beach. Those are the hours a day tripper is on the road home. The St Naum boats, which leave at 10:00 and 11:00 and return by 16:30, would take most of a day on their own.

If you only have a day, the tours below are the practical option, though expect a long day. Otherwise, take one night, or two if you want the boat as well.

Fitting Ohrid around Matka

Treat the lake as a separate trip that follows Matka. Visit the canyon in the morning, then take an afternoon bus. Wikivoyage lists several Skopje departures between 14:00 and 16:00, though some run only June to August, so confirm the day’s timetable at the station. See where to stay in Skopje if you want a base in the capital before or after. The day tours page lists what tours include, and the home page covers Matka itself. For shorter trips, see nearby day trips, the Millennium Cross and the Old Bazaar. Seasons are on our best time to visit page.
