The short answer
Aim for June, September or October. Two guides recommend those months, and one adds May. The weather is comfortable, the paths are less crowded than in July and August, and the boats and kayaks are said to be running. July and August suit swimming, though the water is cold and the heat is real. Winter is quiet, with fewer boats. In every season, get there before 10am and, if you can, on a weekday.
Weather by season
The figures below come from Wikipedia’s climate table for Skopje airport, which uses 1991 to 2020 averages and classes the city as humid subtropical. The table covers the airport weather station, not the gorge, so treat the numbers as a guide rather than a forecast for the canyon.
- Spring, March to May: mean daily highs rise from 14.5°C in March to 19.4°C in April and 24.4°C in May. Lows are 1.9°C, 5.7°C and 10.3°C. Rain falls on 10 or 11 days a month.
- Summer, June to August: highs are 29.2°C in June and about 32°C in July and August, with lows of 14.3°C to 16.3°C. July and August see the fewest rain days of the warm months, 7 and 6. The record is 43.7°C, so the averages understate a hot spell. WeatherSpark puts the hot season at about 3 June to 15 September.
- Autumn, September to November: highs fall from 26.7°C in September to 20.1°C in October and 12.5°C in November. Rain days run at 6 in September, 7 in October and 9 in November.
- Winter, December to February: highs are 5.9°C, 4.8°C and 9.0°C, and lows drop to between minus 1.4°C and minus 3.3°C. WeatherSpark places the cold season at about 24 November to 27 February.
Daylight matters in the cold months. WeatherSpark gives about 9 hours 7 minutes on the shortest day, 21 December, and about 15 hours 15 minutes on the longest, 21 June.
On rain, the sources disagree. Wikipedia’s table shows June as the wettest month by volume, at 54 mm, with 483 mm a year. WeatherSpark names November. We have not picked a wettest month, and you should not plan around one.
When boats and kayaks run
None of the guides we checked quotes an operator timetable, and we found no official schedule. The best month-by-month statement comes from one guide, shown below. It does not mention April, so we have left April out.
| Activity | January | February | March | April | May | June | July | August | September | October | November | December |

| Boats and kayaks, all activitiesSpring and autumn have all activities running, and summer suits swimming. Cave trips may not run every day. | Not in January | Not in February | Not in March | Not in April | Runs in May | Runs in June | Runs in July | Runs in August | Runs in September | Runs in October | Not in November | Not in December |
| Boats and kayaks, limitedSome boat tours and kayak rentals may run in a limited way in the cold. | Runs in January | Runs in February | Runs in March | Not in April | Not in May | Not in June | Not in July | Not in August | Not in September | Not in October | Runs in November | Runs in December |
Boats do not follow a fixed timetable. Two guides say they leave when they have enough passengers, and one says that in summer the first boat goes at 9:00. Another says boats run mainly in daylight and mostly in the warmer months, and can be sparse or weather-dependent outside them. A third found that cave trips were not running on her visit, so her boat did not stop at Vrelo Cave. Ask at the dock before you pay. The boat and kayak page has the detail, and the Vrelo Cave page covers the cave.
Pay in cash. One guide says cards are unreliable at the kiosks and boats.
Crowds, weekends and time of day
Weekends. One guide calls Matka the capital’s favourite weekend escape. Another says weekends and midday are busier, and a third says the free parking fills quickly at weekends. Weekend buses are also riskier, since one guide warns that they may stop short of the car park. The getting there guide has the transport detail.
Time of day. One guide reached the trail around 8am and had it almost to herself, but found it packed with tour-bus groups by 10am. Another advises arriving before 10am in any season, and a third says mornings are cooler and help you avoid boat queues.
Season. The guides disagree slightly. One says boats are busiest from late spring through summer. Another says parking and boat queues peak in summer. A third says June, September and October are less crowded and milder than July and August.
Choosing your month
- May and June: one guide calls spring one of the best seasons, with pleasant temperatures and all activities running.
- July and August: the best months for swimming, but the water is cold. One guide saw few swimmers in September even with temperatures above 30°C. It is hot for hiking, so start early.
- September and October: milder than summer, with highs falling from 26.7°C to 20.1°C.
- November to March: quiet, with the days at their shortest and boats and kayaks possibly limited. The canyon itself stays free to enter.
- April: the guides we checked do not say how boats and kayaks run, though the airport’s average high is 19.4°C.
If you book a day tour, ask the operator whether the boat and cave visit are possible on your date. Our day tours page lists what to ask.
